Your Web Site Name

You arrive at a web site by using its name, for example, this one is www.cantweb.co.uk. These names are called domain names because the dots inside them are used to provide structure. Domains are managed from right to left, a company called Nominet manages the .co.uk address space and we registered cantweb.co.uk with them. Once registered, we then add names into the cantweb.co.uk name range providing www.cantweb.co.uk. Your browser then looks up this web site name in a service we provide to the Internet to get a number, the IP address, that is used to locate the actual computer that provides this web site.

When we register a domain name for you, say yourdomain.co.uk, we will provide a mapping for a number of different names:

  • www.yourdomain.co.uk will be your public web site.
  • admin.yourdomain.co.uk will be some administration pages for your web site, typically allowing you to look at your web site statistics or manage the email SPAM detection and prevention system.
  • new.yourdomain.co.uk is frequently used to create a new web site for you in parallel with the old, so when it's ready it can be instantly installed.
  • yourdomain.co.uk can be used as your email address. We do not provide mailboxes but can forward your mail onto other ISPs giving you the flexibility of choosing who handles your mail. For more details see Handling your email.

Nominet Terms and ConditionsNominetWhen we register a .uk domain name for you, you are also entering into a contract with Nominet and you implicitly agree to their terms and conditions. This is a separate contract from any you will have with us. Please read the Nominet page before you ask us to register your domain name.

Your UK domain name is your property, we manage for you, but in the event of any dispute you can go to Nominet's web site and move it elsewhere.
